Eat Like a King with Weber Smokey Joe charcoal grill Barbecue
The Weber Smokey Joe charcoal grill barbecue is an ideal portable grill for apartment balconies, cookouts, tailgate parties, and camping.
The cooking grate measures 14-1/2-inch diameter and is triple nickel-plated, so it will never rust. Weber uses high-quality porcelain enameled coating for the lid and the base, this prevents rust and fading. The glass reinforced nylon handle allows you to easily remove the lid as needed. I have been using mine since the last three years, without any problem.
Lastly Weber Smokey Joe comes with 10-year limited warranty.
Grilling and Smoking Meat with Weber Smokey Joe charcoal grill Barbecue
I would recommend using bone and skin on chicken as it helps enhance the flavor.
Large breasts will take roughly 1 hr and similarly full-legs will take roughly 1 hr 15 min to grill. I recommend starting bone side down, protecting the meaty side of your breast, the same applies to the legs.
The best meat I have grilled so far has been Pork Chop and Pork Ribs they are just succulent and tender.
For grilling fish like Salmon, Mackerel or even Barracuda I would recommend using a fish basket, as otherwise the meat being more tender, tends to stick to the grill or break apart easily.
Please add some Olive Oil in your Marinade, so that way the meat is well lubricated when placed on the grill. I use a Grillpro silicone basting brush to coat the meats with more dressing or marinade while grilling.
To smoke the meat, all you need to do is cover the bottom vent and place the lid on the top. This way the meat will cook slowly via convection and have a nice smokey flavor.I generally do this as the last step before removing the meat from the grill. You can get some extra smokey flavor by adding some hickory or apple wood, this gives the meat a very nice taste.
The temperature is regulated via the daisy wheel opening at the bottom and the top of the grill.
I don’t know how to describe it, but believe me the taste cannot be compared with traditional grilling with a gas or electric stove.
Grilling Veggies, Paneer or Cheese
I have grilled Red and Yellow Peppers/Capsicum, Zuchini, Potatoes, Paneer/Cheese and Corn and they come out just great, vegetables will just take just 5-10 minutes to grill so they are real easy. I have also grilled entire corn which tastes really good.
# of People/Serving
Who ever thinks you need a huge grill to throw down a BBQ party is dead wrong. The Weber Smokey Joe charcoal grill Barbecue while being small (14.5 inch grill) can easily grill enough meat and veggies in one sitting to serve 5 people.
Also remember smaller the grill, the easier to use and easier to clean.
- Very simple and easy-to-use design
- High quality flame resistant coating
- Great for your apartment balcony and small gatherings or outdoor trips with your family
- A great feature is the rounded top. This enables better smoking, as air and smoke circulates more fluidly.
- The vents on the bottom will heat your coals or briquets faster
- Ash collection plate is very useful
- The legs are made of Aluminum, while they are rust proof, they can get easily bend out of shape if you exert some pressure on them. So be careful how you store your grill.
- I dropped the lid once from roughly four feet of height and it landed on the lip and bent out of shape, but with some effort I could push it back in shape. So be careful.
- Weber Smokey Joe Silver model has no lid-lock, this makes transportation a bit cumbersome, especially for a grill that is meant to be portable. You have to buy the Gold or Platinum version to get this functionality. I just use a couple bungee cords to lock my lid down during transportation.
Why I choose Smokey Joe Silver over Gold?
Weber Smokey Joe Gold is designed for portability, the only difference is that Weber Smokey Joe Gold comes with a handle that helps secure the lid while transporting and it has two small side vents, instead of the traditional bottom vents.
The bottom vents are the most important feature in a Weber Smokey Joe as it helps the coals burn easily, it also helps in regulating temperature. So that is why I decided to go with Weber Smokey Joe Silver.
Charcoal or Briquets
You can use the Briquets sold by Weber, or you can pick up a bag of charcoal from your local supermarket.
One thing I would like to mention is that it does not require a lot of coal, one of the reasons could be because Weber has optimized the design to capture the maximum amount of heat and smoke from the Coal or Briquets.
One word of caution: If you are using this on your balcony, just ensure that you don’t have high flames otherwise the sparks may travel a distance and may cause problems.
Weber Rapidfire Chimney Starter
It is highly recommended that you also buy a fire starter kit, I am using the Weber 7416 Rapidfire Chimney Starter. This has been a big boon as I can get the coal fire started in under five minutes.
To use the Weber Smokey Joe Charcoal Grill Barbecue, all you need to do is fill the container with the desired amount of coal and then place it directly over a flame, a gas burner in my case. The coals will light-up within five minutes.
Without the fire starter kit I used to struggle for at least 30-40 minutes to get the fire started using old newspapers and rags soaked in vegetable oil and lighter fluid. I had to keep adding lighter fluid, while fanning the flames, resulting in me inhaling a lot of smoke – a messy and tiring affair.
As you can see this comes with a handle and heat guard, it also comes with a hanger that you can use as a swivel, to empty the hot coal into the grill.
The good thing is, you don’t have to clean the Weber Rapidfire Chimney Starter, just ensure that you store it in a nice dry place, as it tends to rust easily.
Cleaning and Storing
It will take you roughly 15-20 minutes clean the two grills, the lid and the bottom.
I mix some disk washing liquid with some Bar Keepers Friend Multipurpose Cleaner and Polisher and spread it on the grills and the base, allow it to soak for a few minutes before proceeding to scrub and remove the grease and coal residue.
I agree cleaning can take sometime, but the succulent and tender BBQ meat just makes up for any of the extra work 🙂
Shipping and Packaging
The Weber Smokey Joe Grill is shipped disassembled; with the lid and the base placed one in another so it arrives in quite a compact package. It is also very easy to put together, you just need a screwdriver to fix the handles and the stand.
Ordering in India
The Weber products in India are unfortunately priced almost 3x higher than in North America, which is kind of difficult to fathom, but in any case I think it is still a great buy.
I would recommend buying on Amazon.in
Hands down this is best grill $30 will buy. So go for it and please share your experience with Weber Smokey Joe Charcoal Grill Barbecue?
